Every breast cancer diagnosis is the start of a journey that requires incredible inner strength and courage. For many survivors, this personal battle inspires a compelling need to give back, to do something, to make a difference. The 47 women and men portrayed in Komen North Jersey’s extraordinary photo essay, “Journeys of Courage” shared their stories to heighten awareness of the disease that so deeply touched their lives.
Each year, we select a survivor who has demonstrated an extraordinary boldness and braveness in taking their breast cancer journey public so that others could gain hope and courage from his or her experience. Each “Journey” is professionally photographed by renowned photographer Berit Bizjak (who has done all of our Journey portraits pro bono). We make the unveiling of each “Journey” a special and memorable moment; typically we plan an unveiling to occur during a major event.
The full-size portrait banners (9 ft tall) are displayed throughout Northern New Jersey during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the year at sponsor events, at shopping malls, at our Race, at our Pink Tie Party, and at other occasions; smaller versions are prominently displayed at our headquarters in Summit.
