FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Susan G. Komen North Jersey to Celebrate 10th Annual Race for the Cure®
at landmark Liberty State Park in Jersey City
May 8, 2017 – Breast cancer is not usually considered a cause for celebration, but for the hundreds of survivors expected at the 2017 Susan G. Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure®, it’s a much anticipated day to celebrate. Nearly 2,000 people from across New Jersey and the tri-state region and beyond—men and women, young and old, children, families and individuals—are expected to be at Liberty State Park in Jersey City (a new location this year) on Sunday, May 21st to celebrate with them.
Putting survivorship front-and-center—recognizing and remembering those who have fought, or who are still fighting breast cancer every day of their lives—has long been the signature of the Komen North Jersey Race, thanks in large part to RWJBarnabas Health, who has been the official Survivor Sponsor since the first Race in 2008. This year, the RWJBarnabas Health organization is also represented by the four 2017 Race Chairs: Joseph F. Scott, Executive Vice President, Office of Health Care Transformation, RWJBarnabas Health and President and CEO of Jersey City Medical Center; Mary Ellen Clyne, PhD, President and CEO of Clara Maass Medical Center; Rachelle Leong, MD, Fellowship Training and Board Certified Breast Surgeon of Clara Maass Medical Center; and Julie DiGioia, MD, F.A.C.S, of Jersey City Medical Center.
“It is my honor to represent Jersey City Medical Center and RWJBarnabas Health as a co-chair of the 10th Annual 2017 Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure,” says Scott. “RWJBarnabas Health is proud to support an organization that consistently strives to combat breast cancer, educate families and empower survivors. We invite you to bring your family to Liberty State Park and join us for this important cause.”
Beloved radio personality Patty Steele, co-host of WCBS-FM’s popular morning show “The Big Show with Scott Shannon and Patty Steele,” will serve as this year’s Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure Honorary Survivor Ambassador. A Montclair, NJ resident and a three-year breast cancer survivor, Steele went public with her diagnosis on-air (newly-diagnosed listeners actually called her to ask her questions about her treatment and experience) and is a passionate advocate and spokesperson for the fight against breast cancer. Steele will speak during the Survivor Ceremony and will be available in the Survivor Tent to meet-and-greet participants and fellow survivors. In addition to meeting Steele, Survivors, Forever Fighters and their guests will also be able to take in an array of activities designed to enhance their Race Day experience: a hot breakfast compliments of ShopRite, mini-makeovers, door prizes, giveaways, a special Commemorative Race Medal, and more.
WABC-TV Eyewitness News reporter Anthony Johnson will officiate as Master of Ceremonies. Johnson, a high energy, award-winning journalist, is a recipient of the regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio & Television News Directors Association. Throughout the day, his famous and familiar voice will be guiding runners, walkers and guests through the highlights: a USATF-Certified 5K Timed Run, a 5K Fun Walk, and the emotionally moving Survivor Procession and Celebration. Other not-to-miss activities include a Wellness Pavilion sponsored by Montclair Radiology and CarePoint Health, a fun Kids Zone sponsored by Medieval Times, and live music (to keep everyone moving!) by local band Running Late.
No event of note would be complete without an “after party” and thanks to host Newport Centre, a Simon Mall, the After Party for the Cure will offer a variety of activities throughout the afternoon. Relax in the Pink Lounge on the 2nd floor from 1:00pm-6:00pm and enjoy a complimentary five minute massage, nail polish changes and health screenings courtesy of CarePoint Health. Sip on strawberry milkshakes or winter berry iced tea and indulge in hamburger sliders, peppermint bark cheesecake, and other hors d’oeuvres. Enjoy a free bracelet restyling from Pandora, and for a limited time only, purchase an exclusive Susan G. Komen Pandora charm (all proceeds will directly benefit Susan G. Komen North Jersey). Stylist and Consultant Samantha Brown invites you to shop, relax, and enjoy the latest trends carefully chosen by hers truly. Race participants should make sure to stop by The Pink Lounge to receive exclusive event discounts.
Pole Position Raceway will host Racing for the Cure at 12:00pm, with racing in electric karts for a discounted cost of $20 for non-members and $18 for members (regularly priced at $25 for non-members and $20 for members). Participants must present their Race for the Cure bib for race discount. Medieval Times will offer discounted shows following the Race—visit the Komen Ticket Portal to purchase tickets!
“We are very excited to be holding our 10th Race for the Cure at Liberty State Park,” says Kelly Nagle Witkowski, Executive Director of Komen North Jersey. “It will be amazing to witness this coming together of thousands of like-minded people. People who are passionate about the fight against breast cancer, running, walking and celebrating against the incomparable backdrop of New York City and the Statue of Liberty. We are grateful to Mayor Stephen Fulop and Jersey City for all the support they’ve given us in bringing our Race to this landmark National Park.”
